Tap it

What

As essential as it is to life, water falls out of the sky for free, and pours out taps for a bit more.

Yet, 7.7 billion plastic bottles of water are bought each year in the UK.

Disposable plastic water bottles have a hugely damaging environmental impact, particularly when it comes to polluting our oceans. Drink tap water for the next two months, save money and reduce waste while rehydrating the natural (and low impact) way.

Benefits

For people
Microplastics and other harmful materials have been found in bottled water. Although present in tap water too, WHO suggests that biofilms from single-use plastic bottles are an additional source of toxins

Plastic absorbs toxins and hormone disruptors from the environment and transfers them into our systems.

Marketing has bewitched us to believe that bottled water is safer than tap. Not only is this a myth, some brands only bottle tap water without any further treatment.

Benefits for Planet
More than 5 billions tonnes of plastic ever produced has ended up in the landfill or the environment. It is a threat to biodiversity and the survival of many vital species.

How

Start
Buy yourself a reusable bottle (or, for bonus points, use a bottle you already own), and aim to replace bottled water entirely.

Stick
Stick to using it, from putting it in your car or somewhere prominent when leaving home, practise the habit of always having a bottle. It will help you stay hydrated more often!

Slice
If you like flavoured water, try putting a slice of lemon, orange or lime in your water bottle at the start of the day. Or, if you’re feeling extra fruity, mix it up with strawberries, mint, watermelon, raspberries or cucumber.

Ask
Don’t be shy to ask for tap water at restaurants. When out and about in the UK look out for bottle-friendly refilling stations or find one with the Refill App.

Give
GiveMeTap is one of our favourite reusable water bottle brands. Handy sized and easy to clean, each sale funds drinking water for someone in Africa.
