What

Wash your clothes at a cool and efficient 30°C and all that will shrink is your carbon footprint (oh, and your energy bills). Most modern detergents are designed to work perfectly at cooler temperatures, so you'll still get your whites sparkling.

Benefits

For people
We are all aware that energy costs money. By washing at 30°C instead of 40°C, you could save £40 consumed by your laundry. Ok, so it's not quite like winning the jackpot, but it's enough to get a few extra bucks, and good for clothing too. When you wash clothes at a cooler temperature they last longer too.

For planet

We've all become so accustomed to having piping hot water at the twist of a tap that it's easy to forget what an energy-intensive luxury it is. Washing at 30°C instead of 40°C cuts energy usage by 40%.

How

This one is very straightforward!

Use a 30°C or 20°C wash setting. Switch to a liquid laundry detergent to help shift stains. Pre-treat tough stains with diluted detergent for the best chance of removing them.

Run a 60°C maintenance wash every 1-2 months.
Try a few other laundry-related good deeds while you're at it:
- Always wait until you have a full load (pledge Fully loaded)
- Use Eco settings wherever possible, they use less water
- Use eco-friendly detergent (think of the fishies!)
- Hang your laundry to dry naturally.
