Aberdeen Climate Action

Aberdeen Climate Action is an unfunded volunteer run organisation based in the North East of Scotland that aims to raise awareness of climate change and prompt action to reduce carbon emissions and live sustainably. To that end, it runs a popular climate café in the Belmont Filmhouse Café Bar every first Tuesday of the month on different sustainability topics, which showcases local projects, knowledge and experience. The Café aims to encourage and inspire people to take action together or individually to live sustainably and has succeeded in that with new projects and initiatives springing from it and being supported by it alongside individual change. It also arranges the annual Climate Week North East, 10 days of events in March, taking place around the region, organised by a multitude of different organisations and individuals and has created and runs the related website and facebook page for CWNE. ACA members man stalls at various events to interact and help raise awareness of climate change and the actions we can all take and give talks, when requested for schools, clubs etc. It also recently organised an Oil Tech to Clean Tech Conference and arranges other various other one off events. It is a very flexible and agile organisation.

Part of ACA’s work lies in supporting other local projects and organisations, coming within the sustainability theme, and creating a network and helping find ‘mentors’ to share knowledge, resources and help cross publicise events etc. ACA has created a one stop sustainability ‘hub’ website to help those living and visiting the North East to be able to live sustainably and find those farmers markets, plastic free shops, bike rental initiatives etc. – www.sustainableaberdeen.com and has its own ACA website for information on Climate Change – www.aberdeenclimateaction.org. It has a wide array of social media – facebook, twitter, Linked In and Instagram, which it uses to promote articles, information and events focused on reducing GHG emissions.
Alongside all of this ACA also undertakes certain campaigns for instance, on the Scottish Climate Change Bill, segregated bike paths etc. It recently undertook a consultation on how we can create a sustainable North East and has taken the outcomes from that process to the heads of both Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire Councils, as well as all the local councillors to prompt discussion and action at a local authority level. Basically, it does all it can, with all the resources it has, taking account of its volunteers knowledge, expertise and passion, to make the North East of Scotland a more connected, happier and sustainable place to live and work.
